It’s a common refrain in senior living that today’s assisted living communities are closer to yesterday’s skilled nursing facilities.

New Android App to Protect Cell Phone Users from the Health Hazards of Smartphones
Safe Phone is a first of its kind activity tracking smartphone app developed
by Dr. Madhukar Dama. He says, “According to the World Health Organization
Smartphones have the potential to cause cancer, Users of this new app
needn’t worry though; Safe Phone app helps in using the smartphone wisely,
keeping the hazards and radiation in check and making sure app users stay
healthy.”
The idea of Safe Phone app was conceived after success of his 2013 book
Mobile Phone Safety. Improper and overuse of cell phones is linked to eye
damage, headache, tingling, tinnitus, infertility, learning disorders in
children, anxiety, depression, loss of concentration, insomnia, memory loss,
impaired immunity, fatigue, genetic damage and so on. The scientific
community is also debating numerous studies that have linked cell phone
radiation and brain cancer. The book suggested a 3Rs approach of Replacing
the Cell Phone with safer alternatives like land phones, Reducing the cell
phone use and Refining the usage style to avoid these health risks. The app
helps the user in implementing the 3Rs principal easily.
The Safe Phone app tracks a variety of factors such as; radiation emitting
potential of the phone (specific absorption rate or SAR), time spent making
voice calls during dangerously low levels of signal strength, time spent
browsing the internet or staring at the phones display. This data is captured
in real-time and continuously undergoes background calculations. The results
are presented as easy to understand colored circles to help users comprehend
their risk of hazards from smartphone use. The circles change from red
(Hazard) across 4 color gradations to green (Safety) based on the results of
the internal calculations. The Safe Phone app’s purpose is to guide users
to ensure that they are using their Smartphone safely. The user has to take
small steps to maintain the circles green, so that the hazard is least. The
real-time cumulative usage report can be accessed from the app. User is
instantly notified on initiating voice call if the chances of exposure to
radiation are higher.
As mentioned above, the World Health Organization (WHO) now considers
Smartphones as a carcinogenic hazard. The agency reached this decision after
a team of 31 scientists from 14 different countries carried out peer-reviewed
studies on Smartphone safety. International Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC) currently classify Smartphone radiation as Group 2B, which means they
consider cell phone radiation as possibly carcinogenic. The agency uses a
rating system which ranges from group 4 (probably not carcinogenic) to group
1 (carcinogenic to humans).
On the apps Facebook page, the developer says their mission is to protect all
smartphone users from the hazards of radiation. The developers are currently
working on a website for their new app, it will be live from 25th March 2016
via the following url, www.safephoneonline.com.
The new android app is now available for free download on:
