How new technology reduces the cost of long-term care
SAN DIEGO, CA, January 5, 2016 — Independa, a San Diego based software company
dedicated to providing person-centric independent living solutions that support independence as
we age, has released a premium white paper titled “Caregiving at the Crossroads | A proven
case for change: Using technology to reduce the cost of long term care” exploring the
challenges agencies and caregivers face as Baby Boomers age.
Need for integrated, cost-effective care
“Caring for our aging loved ones is incredibly costly and time-consuming, both on a personal
and agency level,” says Kian Saneii, the Founder, CEO and Chairman at Independa. “Providing
room and board, food and bathing, care and cleaning consume an average of at least 20 hours
per week for both independent caregivers and health professionals serving eldercare
communities. When you add in medication compliance and social isolation for older adults, it’s a
struggle for everyone involved.”
Existing technologies such as home sensors that monitor activity levels of appliance use and
biometrics like blood pressure, Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) - the infamous
“Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” - as well as phones and tablets have been developed in an
attempt to address the devastating effects of both immediate and chronic health management
issues and depression as a result of social isolation for seniors. While well-intentioned, these
technologies are not sufficient to address modern health needs of older adults due to their
single-purpose designs and low rates of use due to confusing interfaces, software updates, and
forgotten passwords.
Holistic, Integrated Solutions
“Throwing laptops, PERS, and similar products at the problem clearly are not enough. With 40
million American adults aged 65+, we need a holistic solution yesterday. Our Moms and Dads,
Grandmas and Grandpas, and other extended older relatives cannot keep waiting, forgotten, at
the bottom of a list for meaningful help”, says Saneii. “IndependaTV™ and IndependaTVe™ are
solutions that solve common problems of aging.. The ability for caregivers to provide “telecare” -
that is, care from a distance - in a native platform our aging loved ones are familiar with is
unprecedented.”
For the first time ever, dining menus and community calendars, video chat and photo sharing,
medication reminders and wellness check-ins can be directly shared by agency caregivers and
family with the older adults they care for and love.
