Electronic Caregiver Company's Health Innovations Promise to Excite Smart Phone Adoption by Seniors!
The Electronic Caregiver Company, SameDay Security, Inc., has organized an innovative team of software development engineers, PhDs in Kinesiology, biomechanics engineers, medical professionals, and the resources of a $13M Senior Fall Research Laboratory at New Mexico State University. The latest Electronic Caregiver innovations are being designed for incorporation in smartphones like the iPhone 6, smart watches like Apple Watch, and wearable devices such as Google Glass.
What's possible with these new offerings? They include integration into smartphone health services that monitor behavioral and movement patterns. The offerings also issue warnings if a risk of fall or injury increases, meaning the prevention of accidents and mortalities. Imagine haptic reminders on the back of the wrist that can alert users to a sudden change of gait that has increased the risk of fall based on validated, published scoring methods. Think of the peace of mind that comes from having a 24/7 medical concern button to enable an instant connection to a specialist during escalating health emergencies including trouble swallowing or breathing, head pain, and abdominal pain. The new offerings add the possibility of personalized guides to help correct behaviors that threaten overall wellness and the ability to live independently at home. These innovations give rise to a mobile Electronic Caregiver by summoning help during an emergency, as well as automatically notifying family members if a loved one forgets to follow through on a prescribed treatment plan. Picture a daily living home care and support system that makes the smart phone not only a necessary aide, but also a joy for seniors to use and interact with.
"We see several opportunities converging. We see senior health needs and the capabilities of mobile technologies converging to establish an unprecedented opportunity for our company, mobile device manufacturers, health professionals, research institutions, cellular service providers, and end users. The applications feed us further data. The data is interpreted, and repeats the cycle of new product development. It's a win-win opportunity with a big future ahead," said Anthony Dohrmann, CEO and Founder of The Electronic Caregiver Company.
Senior health needs are growing as fast as their population. According to the Administration of Aging, by 2030, there will be approximately 72.1 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. Mobile devices offer a launch platform to deliver aides, tutorials, and support to seniors, impossible a few years ago.
The Electronic Caregiver Company has invested over $7M into senior services and research. Three years ago they began collaborating with New Mexico State University (NMSU), who has developed the most advanced research laboratory over 15 years to assess senior fall causes, prevention, and safety. In November 2013, after a lengthy collaboration with NMSU scientists, the company purchased, programmed, and deployed a high technology mobile research laboratory of its own. The purpose was to collect multi-dimensional data from thousands of elderly subjects, from a variety of backgrounds and health dispositions. Since then, the lab has crossed the United States, screening, assessing, and collecting valuable data across 12 states. In early 2014, the company completed it's first mobile software application designed to leverage the sensors inside Google Glass devices for clinical gait analysis. That software is now in the process of evolving through detailed testing, analysis, and programming, to be converted to Apple IPhones and the Apple Watch.
Company management says this is only the beginning. The Electronic Caregiver COO, Ken Hoeksema, says, "We see the ability to use video recognition and behavioral learning software, along with the data we're collecting in the field, to bring forth a next-generation of home based, electronic caregiving support in the connected-home environment". According to Dr. Glen Stream of the American Academy of Family Physicians, in an AP article, "We're recognizing, more and more, that not all care needs to be delivered face to face."
As of April 3rd, 2014, just 18% of seniors own a smartphone, according to Pew's new report on seniors' digital habits. "This low market penetration should be unacceptable to industry, and I'm certain they're investigating plans to open the door to this expansive market place. Our company sees its products as a missing-link to connect smartphones to seniors in ways that are useful, relevant, and meaningful. Clearly, innovative and compelling senior service solutions must be developed and delivered to serve the enormous opportunities and needs provided by the untapped portion of the market", said Dohrmann.
