50 Nevada AARP Members Set to #DisruptAging at 2015 CES
AARP will unleash 50 tech-savvy seniors on the 2015 CES Show to test drive the technology and see if it meets the wants and needs of 50+ consumers. Wearing #DisruptAging shirts, 50 volunteers will explore the Lifelong Tech Pavilion at the Sands Expo on Tuesday, January 6 starting at 10:30 a.m., with a consumer eye toward whether investors and inventors hit the mark on cutting-edge products that people 50+ are waiting for. Several of the members will also participate in a panel from 12–12:30 p.m. at the Venetian Hotel on level 2 during the Lifelong Tech Summit to share their observations.
"This will be the second year that we have descended on CES to try out the latest technology," said AARP Senior Vice President Thought Leadership Jody Holtzman. "AARP is committed to showing the tech industry that people over 50+ make up a powerful longevity economy, representing 106 million people responsible for at least $7.1 trillion in annual economic activity, a group that successful businesses won't want to ignore."
"When AARP Nevada opened up the opportunity to members to attend CES 2015, within an hour we had more interest than we could accommodate," said Carla Sloan, AARP Nevada state director. "Some of the members who attended last year continue to lead the way in technology, helping run social media training for other Boomers in the community. Some are even returning to help lead the Lifelong Tech tours at CES 2015."
AARP Commitment Beyond CES 2015
AARP has a commitment to ensuring that people 50+ can take advantage of all the promise of technology. Earlier this year AARP introduced the RealPad. AARP's first retail product is an easy-to-use tablet with large icons, video tutorials and a 24-hour support line to help tech-shy seniors become tech-savvy.
AARP's Innovation at 50+ is also breaking new ground by amplifying the need for investors and inventors to create a 50+ strategy so products that can help older adults make it from conception to consumers' shopping carts. It has also held a series of "LivePitch" events to identify and promote entrepreneurs who are developing health care products and services for the 50+ community. These events, which have been held for the past three years, have attracted more than 400 applications and helped companies raise approximately $47 million in venture capital.
One of the biggest areas of growth is health and wellness technology. In October, AARP and United Healthcare launched the Longevity Network website at longevitynetwork.org to highlight some of those innovations and nine frontiers that are prime for health and wellness technology innovation. The nine frontiers are: medication management, aging with vitality, vital sign monitoring, care navigation, emergency detection and response, physical fitness, diet and nutrition, social engagement, and behavioral and emotional health.
