Lifecomm to Preview Next Generation Mobile Personal Emergency Response System at CES
Joint venture of industry leaders Hughes Telematics, Inc., Qualcomm Incorporated and American Medical Alert Corp.
LAS VEGAS, January 5, 2011– Lifecomm LLC will unveil its vision for the next generation Mobile Personal Emergency Response System (MPERS) at the Digital Health Summit, 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The stylish, technologically advanced device is expected to be commercially available by the end of 2011.
Lifecomm is a joint venture of Hughes Telematics, Inc., (HTI) (OTCBB: HUTC, HUTCW), Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) and American Medical Alert Corp. (Nasdaq: AMAC) and operates as a majority-owned subsidiary of HTI.
“Lifecomm is creating the next generation of MPERS for the new generation of users,” said Jeff Leddy, chief executive officer of HTI. “The current senior market is more active and wants the safety and peace of mind offered by a MPERS device that allows them to live their lives to the fullest - on their own terms - the way they choose. Additionally, they have become accustomed to the sleek designs of today’s technology and want the modern stylish look of devices such as Lifecomm’s three wearable configurations.”
Modern styling and aesthetic appeal are qualities currently lacking with most products found in the PERS and limited MPERS markets today. Supporting the stylish exterior of the Lifecomm device will be advanced electronics that include a cellular modem for wireless voice and data communications, as well as an embedded GPS which, combined with other sensors, will enable location-based and activity level features.
The Lifecomm MPERS device will utilize Qualcomm’s Internet of Everything™ module and wireless chipset technology. “The majority of today’s personal emergency response systems work only within range of a home-based receiving system,” said Don Jones, vice president of business development of wireless health at Qualcomm. “Today’s more active senior wants to maintain their independence, but with the reassurance of easy, on-the-go access to emergency assistance.”
For families who worry about the safety of a senior family member, the Lifecomm device will offer a non-intrusive means of remotely monitoring a loved one. The Lifecomm solution will empower caregivers, family members and users with web-based tools used to customize device settings and monitor activity levels.
“Every year, one in three adults 65 and older experience some sort of fall,” said Jack Rhian, president and chief executive officer of AMAC. “The Lifecomm device will incorporate automatic fall detection capability, so caregivers and family members are quickly notified even if the user is unable to call for help. The enhanced feature set of the Lifecomm system will enhance the lives of our traditional PERS users both inside and outside the home.”
Lifecomm’s Richard Lobovsky, vice president of business development, will provide information on the next generation of wireless health and wellness solutions at the Digital Health Lunch Panel: A Sneak Peek at The Future of Wireless Health, starting Friday, Jan. 7th at 12:30 p.m. and at the Silvers Summit: Intelligent Systems for Caregivers, starting Saturday, Jan. 8th at 3 p.m. Both events will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), North Hall, N253.
